Five prisoners and a number of staff members have tested positive for Covid-19 at Wheatfield Prison in Dublin.

The Irish Prison Service carried out mass testing of all staff and prisoners at the prison after a number of staff tested positive for the virus last week.

In a statement, the Irish Prison Service (IPS) said it "and Wheatfield Prison management have implemented a comprehensive contingency plan to prevent the spread of Covid-19 to the wider prison population".

The IPS said it is continuing to work closely with HSE/Public Health and that "arrangements are being made with the HSE for the re-testing of all prisoners and staff, later this week, in order to provide an assured response to the current outbreak in Wheatfield Prison".

The IPS said this "will support a return to a more normal prison regime as soon as possible".

There are currently 504 prisoners in Wheatfield, along with around 350 staff.

There have also been cases of coronavirus discovered in the Midlands, Limerick and Mountjoy jails.
