In a statement, the Philippine Consulate Dublin said it sent their "heartfelt condolences" to her family and described her as a "wonderful and gentle soul".

"We offer her daughter Nice, husband Nicolas, and grandchildren Axl and Arabella our thoughts and prayers during this dark time in their lives."

Mariter Tarugo's funeral service was held yesterday on New Year's Eve and as only ten mourners could attend it was also streamed online to allow her friends in Ireland and the Philippines to view the ceremony.

St Vincent's University Hospital said Mariter died in the hospital on Christmas Eve surrounded by her family and described her as "a valued and popular member of our team".

In a statement the hospital said Ms Tarugo is mourned by her colleagues in St Vincent's University Hospital and that their thoughts are with her family at this very difficult and sad time.
