Iarnród Éireann has said it will apply this week for planning permission for a new DART station at Woodbrook in Dublin, between Shankill and Bray.
The new station - the 32nd on the DART network - would serve the residents of a new housing development at Woodbrook.
Funding is to be provided by the National Transport Authority.
Over 5,000 people are expected to be directly served by the new station.
In a statement, Iarnród Éireann said that subject to planning permission being granted, and progress with the Woodbrook development, construction of the new station is expected to begin late next year, with the station opening in early 2023.
The developer of the Woodbrook development, Castlethorn, would provide adjacent parking for cars and bikes of rail customers, the statement added.
