The demolition of one of Dublin's biggest Catholic churches has been approved by Dublin City Council.

The Church of the Annunciation in Finglas was built in the late 1960s for a capacity of almost 3,500 parishioners.

Falling attendance numbers and the cost of upkeep forced its closure.

Mass was last celebrated there in October 2018.

The church is to be demolished and replaced with a smaller church and parish centre.

Dublin City Council has agreed to acquire land at the rear of the proposed new church from the Archdiocese of Dublin for construction of a social housing scheme for older people.

The council is also negotiating with the Health Service Executive on a proposal to develop a primary care centre on the land.
