An elderly woman who was found homeless in Dublin City centre has been put up in hotel accommodation.

The woman was found by volunteers from the charity Reaching Out for Homeless sitting outside the GPO on O'Connell Street at around 9.30pm.

Although she gave her age as 81, outreach workers who have been assisting her for the past number of months say she is in her 60s.

According to the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, the woman was discharged from St James's Hospital earlier in the day, but was with outreach workers who had supported accommodation available.

The executive also said that she has been engaged with it and there is a housing plan for her.

However, Dublin City Councillor Christy Burke, who was contacted by volunteers from the Reaching Out for Homeless charity, said the woman was insisting that she would not go into a hostel.

He said two nights hotel accommodation was secured for her through the city council.

"It’s disgraceful that an elderly woman should be wandering the streets like this. It seems she had been discharged from hospital. She insisted she did not want to go into a hostel," he said.

The woman was described as being from Dublin but "very private" and it is not known if she has any family.

Cllr Burke said he was confident that more secure accommodation would be found for her through one of the homeless charities.
