Winner of Dublin City Marathon completes race in record time

Othmane El Goumri from Morocco has won this year's Dublin City Marathon, completing the race in a record time of 2:08:06.

Irishman Stephen Scullion came second, finishing the race in 2:12:01. This year Irish runners took four of the top ten places.

The winner of the women's race, Motu Gedefa of Ethiopia, finished in a time of 2:27:48 - the second fastest ever. In the wheelchair race, the winner was Patrick Monaghan in a time of 1:39:50

This is the 40th year of the marathon, with more than 20,000 runners taking part.

The original entries sold out in 40 days last December.

The race started at 8.45am and the 42km route took the competitors from the start on Fitzwilliam Square out of the city by Stoneybattter, through the Phoenix Park, back through Inchicore, around UCD and back into the city.

There were around 5,000 overseas entries and the winner of both the men's and women’s races each receives a prize of €12,500.

Before the race started, Dublin Lord Mayor Paul McAuliffe presented special award medals to the 13 runners who have competed in all 40 marathons.

There were 1,400 volunteers helping to organise the event and ten water stations on the route were available for runners to hydrate.

It is the fourth biggest marathon in Europe and has the reputation as "the friendly marathon", according to race director Jim Aughney.
