Gardaí are investigating two incidents at The Helix theatre in Dublin following the cancellation of a boxing event there.

The British heavyweight fighter Tyson Fury was due at the theatre next week, but his appearance was cancelled after a threatening phone call was received.

The theatre was subsequently sprayed with graffiti.

An announcement was then made that both of Fury's events in Dublin and Cork had been cancelled.

The sequence of events that led to the cancellation of the British heavyweight boxer's appearances in Ireland began last Friday lunchtime.

A phone call was received at the Helix warning of "a bloodbath" if the event 'An evening with Tyson Fury' went ahead as scheduled next Wednesday.

A decision was made last weekend to cancel the fighter's appearance in Dublin and at an event at the Cork Opera House was also then cancelled.

However, before this was announced publicly, in the early hours of last Monday morning, the walls and windows of The Helix were sprayed with graffiti, which contained references to drug dealing and the Kinahan organised crime gang.

The cancellations were then announced yesterday morning and put down  to "unforeseen circumstances" in Dublin and "circumstances beyond our control" in Cork.

Gardaí in Dublin are now investigating the threatening phone call and the minor criminal damage to the Helix.

The graffiti has since been cleared.

Gardaí at Ballymun are checking phone records, examining CCTV and appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

It is not the first time a boxing event has been cancelled because of fears it could attract criminal elements.

A Collision Pro Boxing event at CityWest was cancelled in February last year after gardaí expressed security concerns and the organisers could not get insurance.

There was also a shooting the month before outside a boxing event at the National Stadium, which was linked to the ongoing Hutch-Kinahan feud and an unrelated shooting in June 2018 at the Bray Boxing Club during which an innocent man, Bobby Messett, was shot dead. A man has been charged with his murder.

The murder of David Byrne at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel three years ago escalated the ongoing Hutch-Kinahan feud, which has so far cost 19 lives.
