The people of the north county Dublin town of Balbriggan are to be given a say in what the redevelopment of their town will look like as part of a more than €20 million spend.

A vote will be held to allow the residents of the town to decide how the €20m will be spent.

The wide-ranging redevelopment plans include a new river park, new public areas in the town, a reimagined harbour and marina and link-up with a new greenway.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, the chair of Balbriggan Leadership Group said the town has a number of features that make it unique.

"It is the youngest town in Ireland, with an average age of just over 30," Professor Brian MacCraith said.

"There has been massive population growth, over 70% in the last decade, and a very diverse population with over 28% born outside of Ireland."

Prof MacCraith said a programme of consultation has been carried out over the last eight months or so, with a number of key areas identified.

He said these include economy and enterprise, community and integration and employment and education.

Prof MacCraith said the project is now at the stage where they have narrowed down the areas they want to work on and now the community will have a unique opportunity to prioritise what happens over the coming years.

He said people can log on to a specially created website, Balbriggan.ie, to prioritise what gets done and also the sequence in which projects get done.
