Housing association Respond has asked communities around the country to welcome social housing plans for their areas.

Respond has plans for 2,500 social housing units around the country over the next five years.

It has immediate plans to build 101 units in Drumcondra in Dublin and develop other sites in Kildare, Kilkenny, Galway, Donegal, Cork and Monaghan.

CEO Declan Dunne said Respond's ambition is to provide social and affordable homes for more of the population like other European countries where people from all walks of life live side-by-side.

The group allocates 10% of housing for those with disabilities and some will be given to those currently living in homeless hostels.

Respond also runs four family hubs where people stay on average less than six months before getting long-term accommodation.

Mr Dunne said those who refuse Housing Assistance Payment and want to wait for social housing will be supported in their choice.
