The public is being asked to report stockpiling of bonfire material in the run up to Halloween.

Dublin City Council staff have been carrying out pre-dawn raids and expect to collect over 400 tonnes in hidden stashes.

City council staff usually get over 300 calls from members of the public reporting bonfire material.

Waste management officer Simon Brock said: "we get stockpiling of material and fires, due to the stockpiling, and then the bonfires themselves which cause significant damage to public spaces, to green spaces, parks, public amenities.

"We have injuries caused to children around bonfires and the anti-social behaviour generally that occurs around bonfires and this is the type of thing we are trying to avoid happening".

The council is organising 13 different family-friendly festivals and firework displays around the city including Ballymun, Finglas, the Liberties, Donnybrook and Sandymount.
