A number of activists occupying a vacant house in Dublin to highlight what they say is the Government's inaction in tackling the housing crisis say they are prepared to stay "as long as necessary".

It is believed around a dozen people from a number of different housing groups are inside the house at 35 Summerhill Parade in north Dublin.

Around the same number people are outside the premises.

Speaking to RTÉ News, one of the organisers of the occupation said they want Dublin City Council to buy the property, and those alongside it, and give it over to social housing.

Aisling, who works with Dublin Central Housing Action, said the premises has been vacant since May.

She said the action, which began yesterday evening, would go on for "as long as it takes" and that the activists "were going nowhere".

Aisling said a number of different groups were involved in the action and they are collectively calling themselves "Summerhill Occupation".

Solidarity TD Paul Murphy, who was outside the house today, said he was supporting the protest and that it was the kind of action needed to highlight the housing crisis.

He said the action could become a focal point in the same way as the occupation of Apollo House did in 2016.

Mr Murphy said since then the housing crisis has worsened.

Gardaí have said they are aware of the events taking place at Summerhill Parade but are not investigating anything.
