A man has been arrested after an Airsoft gun was found in a van being driven in to Mountjoy Prison this afternoon.
The discovery was made by prison staff who were searching the vehicle on entry to the prison.
The van belonged to a contractor who makes regular deliveries to the prison and it is believed the driver - a 50-year-old man - may have forgotten it was in the vehicle.
The Airsoft gun is not considered to be a weapon under the Firearms Act and was legally held.
The Prison Service confirmed that there was an incident and that it was dealt with by the gardaí.
The man was released without charge and a file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
