The officer in charge of policing Dublin has said that the garda budget for this year has been "exhausted" and there is no money left to pay for overtime.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Leahy told senior managers that no more overtime was to be incurred except in relation to two garda operations.
They are Operation Hybrid, which is targeting the Hutch and Kinahan gangs, and Operation C Port, which has increased patrols and checkpoints at Dublin Port.
Garda operations, which had been planned using overtime, have now been cancelled.
Mr Leahy has directed that all other operations, searches, events and arrests for the rest of the year are to be done by the working units.
This evening, Garda Headquarters said that the gardaí are provided with an annual budget, which is reviewed on a continual basis to ensure they are working within that budget.
Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal Alan Farrell said it was concerning that gardaí overtime for the rest of the year had been cancelled.
He said: "Action must be taken urgently to address this issue regarding overtime for gardaí.
"We must ensure our frontline gardaí have the support and resources they both require and deserve."
