Dublin City Council has been urged to take over the Iveagh Markets which have been lying derelict for 20 years because of a stalled development.
Temple Bar publican Martin Keane was granted a lease on the Victorian building in 1997 and again in 2004 with plans to develop an artisan food market with hotel and restaurant facilities.
However, the project has yet to start because of problems raising finance for the site just off Thomas St.
A number of local councillors successfully tabled a motion calling on council management to begin the process to bring the markets back into their control.
The motion claims that the terms of the lease extension have not been met.
