A man has been charged with knowingly possessing 4kg of TNT in central Dublin, while another man has been charged with IRA membership, at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court this evening.

The first man was charged with possessing an explosive substance, namely ten 400g blocks of TNT, and the explosive head of a hand grenade at Spring Garden Street, Dublin 3, on Friday 2 June.

A second man was charged with membership of an unlawful organisation, namely an organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA, within the State on Friday 2 June.

Solicitor Michael Durcan, for the DPP, told the three-judge court that the DPP had directed both men be tried in respect of the offences at the non-jury court.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt, presiding alongside Judge Flann Brennan and Judge Gerard Haughton, remanded the two men in custody to appear before the court on 9 June next.

An application in respect of bail is expected to be made on behalf of both men on 12 June.
