Gardaí say they have received fresh information about the remains of a man whose dismembered arm was found on a beach in Dublin six years ago.

The information has led gardaí to begin a search of an area in a Finglas park.

DNA testing identified an arm found on Dollymount strand in February 2011 as that of James Nolan.

The 46-year-old, who was originally from Finglas, had served jail sentences for rape and burglary.

He was last seen alive in November 2010.

An inquest found his arm had been severed after his death.

Gardaí said they have been investigating the case for six years and now confidential information has led them to the Tolka Valley Park in Finglas.

An area around the North Road Gate has been cordoned off and a search, using significant resources including a cadaver dog and a forensic archaeologist, is expected to take three weeks.

"From this morning Garda are commencing a significant operation in Tolka Valley Park," said Garda Superintendent Liam Carolan.

"We are asking the public if they have any information relating to this investigation to contact us ... A family liaison officer is in contact with the Nolan family and they have been appraised of this morning's operation," added Mr Carolan.
