Four people, including a serving garda, are still being questioned this afternoon by officers investigating corruption, organised crime offences and the disappearance of a large quantity of drugs from a garda station last year.

The investigation began after gardaí in the eastern region seized over €100,000 worth of drugs and arrested a suspect.

However, when detectives went to put the exhibits to the suspect as part of the interview process, they discovered the drugs had gone missing.

They have never been recovered.

Officers from the eastern region supported by An Garda Síochána's Anti Corruption Unit commenced a criminal investigation and arrested the serving garda yesterday morning

He is being detained under organised crime legislation and can be questioned for up to seven days.

Five other people were also arrested by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

Three of them - two men in their 30s and 40s and a woman in her 30s - are still being questioned.

Two others were released last night without charge.

A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions

The investigation focused on the activities of criminal gangs in the east and southeast of the country and the disappearance of the drugs from the garda station.
