A garda has been arrested by officers investigating the disappearance of a large quantity of drugs from a garda station last year.
The investigation began after gardaí in the east of the country seized over €100,000 worth of drugs and arrested a suspect.
However, when detectives went to put the exhibits to the suspect as part of the interview process, they discovered the drugs had gone missing.
They have never been recovered.
Officers from the Eastern Region supported by the garda anti-corruption unit commenced a criminal investigation into the missing drugs and arrested a serving garda this morning.
He is being detained under organised crime legislation and can be questioned for up to seven days.
The investigation is also focused on the activities of criminal gangs in the east and southeast of the country.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that a serving garda has been arrested and is currently in custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
