The number of murders, manslaughters and unlawful killings dropped by 13% last year, according to the latest crime figures from the Central Statistics Office.

Robbery and related offences were down 10% while drugs offences fell by 7%, largely because of the decrease in people caught in possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use or supply.

However, reported sexual offences increased by 8%, weapons and explosives offences were up 5% while burglary and related offences also increased by 2%.

Thefts also increased by 3%, a crime largely driven by the increase in shoplifting and retail thefts.

There was also an increase in the number of victims of attempted murder, assault, harassment and related offences which rose by 2% to 5,809 victims in 2024 compared to 2023.

The number of male victims rose by 4% to 3,438 while the number of female victims remained virtually unchanged at 2,371.
