Man, 31, charged with murder of Mirjana Pap in Westmeath

A 31-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his mother in Athlone, Co Westmeath, last weekend.

Nebojsa Pap, with an address at Beechville in Athlone, appeared before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court last night.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Craig gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court the 31-year-old made no reply when charged with the murder of his mother Mirjana Pap at her home on Saturday, 28 December.

Mirjana Pap had been living in Athlone

There was no application for bail as the district court has no jurisdiction to consider bail on a murder charge.

The accused's solicitor Mark Cooney made an application for legal aid, which was granted.

Judge Patricia Cronin remanded Mr Pap in custody, with an order that he get medical and psychiatric attention.

He will appear before Athlone District Court next Wednesday via video link.

Mirjana Pap, 58, was found dead in a bog near Clonark in Co Roscommon on Monday afternoon.

The Croatian national had been living in Athlone for over two decades and worked locally in the Lissywollen accommodation centre.
