A man in his 40s arrested in Co Wicklow as part of an investigation into the creation and spreading of false information on social media has been released without charge.

Gardaí have said that a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man was arrested at a property in south Wicklow and was being held at a garda station in the county.

A number of mobile phones and electronic devices were also seized following a search of the property.

Gardaí have said the investigation began in June when a picture of a man travelling on a bus in Newtownmountkennedy was circulated online, accompanied by claims that the man was behaving inappropriately towards a minor.

Inquiries were carried out and it was established that the allegations of inappropriate behaviour were "unfounded and false," they added.

In a statement, gardaí said the publication of the false allegation caused "serious anxiety and concern to the individual depicted".

They said that it also created alarm and concern within the local community.
