Gardaí have appointed a family liaison officer to help the family of an Irish woman murdered in Spain earlier this week.

Kirsty Ward was found fatally injured in the corridor of a hotel in the coastal town of Salou on Sunday night.

Spanish police say the 36-year-old mother-of-one from Dublin appears to have been strangled with a ligature.

A 30-year-old Irish man, who was with her at the time, has appeared before a court in Tarragona that deals specifically with cases involving violence against women.

He was remanded in custody while the criminal investigation led by a magistrate continues.

Ms Ward's family has released a photograph of her to the media and has asked for "privacy during this distressing time".

The family is liaising with the Department of Foreign Affairs and says it will not be making any further statements or comments.
