An investigation is under way after a man died after being shot by gardaí in west Dublin.

The incident happened in the Manorfields Drive area, near the Dublin/Meath border.

Gardaí had been called to the scene following reports of a man armed with a knife at a Eurospar shop in Hartstown.

The man had threatened staff at the shop at around 12.15pm.

The man, who was in his late 20s, then fled from the shop, threatening uniformed gardaí with a knife as he made his way home a short distance away at Manorfields Drive.

Around a dozen gardaí were present at the scene, including members of the Armed Support Unit, and gardaí say they were also threatened with a knife.

They implemented what gardaí call a graduated policing response.

This is where the use of less-than-lethal force options are initially administered in an effort to resolve an incident.

Gardaí say the less-than-lethal use of force options were unsuccessful, and a number of shots were fired from an official Garda firearm at around 12.35pm.

The man was treated at the scene by Armed Support Unit paramedics and Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics.

He was transferred to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown where he has pronounced dead this afternoon.

A post mortem examination will take place tomorrow at 11am.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has been notified of the incident.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Eurospar at 12.15pm or who were in the vicinity of Cherryfield and Manorsfield estates between 12pm and 12.35pm and anyone who may have cctv or other video footage of these incidents to contact them.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Blanchardstown Garda Station 01 666 7000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

GSOC can be contacted at 1890 600 800.

Both investigations are ongoing.
