A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of fraudulently claiming Covid-19 payments.

Gardaí from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) carried out a search at a house in Mullingar, Co Westmeath today on foot of information received from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

A man in his late teens was detained at the scene.

He is suspected of receiving six separate Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payments into a bank account, in what are believed to be bogus names.

Gardaí also seized a sum of cash and counterfeit cash during the search.

Investigations are continuing.
