A garda superintendent and a detective garda arrested in connection with an investigation into suspected corruption in An Garda Síochána were released without charge this morning.

They opted not to rest but to continue questioning overnight and were detained for 24 hours.

A garda inspector detained as part of the same investigation was released last night.

A file on the case will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

All three gardaí have been suspended from duty.

Four members of the garda have now been questioned as part of the investigation.

The three gardaí were detained as part of an investigation into the suspected leaking of information to an organised crime gang in the mid west about a Criminal Assets Bureau investigation into the gang's activities.

It resulted in the seizure of 115 cars and thousands of euro and sterling in cash.

The superintendent is suspected of disclosing confidential information, the inspector of drugs offences and the detective of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
