A "small proportion" of homicides that were wrongly classified by An Garda Síochána may not have been properly investigated, according to the Chairperson of the Policing Authority.
Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, Josephine Feehily said that of the misclassified cases that the force has looked at, "one or two have been identified as perhaps not having been properly investigated".
She said the body is "digging deeper" into these cases.
Ms Feehily was speaking on the programme after RTÉ's This Week revealed that an unpublished report has found gardaí are failing to meet key targets on crime detection and performance.
Ms Feehily said that the Authority's concerns are well flagged in this regard, accusing the force of over-promising and under-delivering.
She said the force promises to do everything at once, instead of prioritising resources.
An Garda Síochána would be better off focusing on a smaller number of targets and giving them the appropriate resources, Ms Feehily said.
In relation to the reported failure to attract and recruit gardaí from minority group, Ms Feehily said progress has been made in this regard.
She said "the diversity bit isn't about being politically correct, it's about providing a policing service to diverse communities".
Ms Feehily added that this does not just include ethnically diversity, but also socio-economically diverse communities.
