A man has been arrested in connection with a serious assault on another man at a house party in Co Monaghan over the weekend.

The victim sustained serious head injuries in a house in the village of Oram, just outside Castleblayney, at a party held to watch the Conor McGregor fight.

A man in his twenties was arrested in Co Monaghan on suspicion of committing an assault causing serious harm.

He is being detained at Castleblayney Garda Station and can be questioned for up to twenty-four hours.

The victim, a married man with four children, remains in a critical condition in intensive care in Beaumont Hospital.

He was one of at least ten men and women at the party.

Gardaí were called to the house at around 9.30am on Sunday morning but believe the assault could have taken place more than three hours earlier and that the man lay seriously injured in the house for some time before an ambulance was called.

Gardaí were contacted by the paramedics and are conducting a criminal investigation with an incident room established at Castleblayney Garda Station.
