John Gilligan has appeared in court in Northern Ireland charged with money laundering offences.
The 66-year-old was arrested in Belfast yesterday as he tried to board a flight to Spain.
Border Force officers discovered €23,000 on him.
He was detained overnight and questioned by the UK's National Crime Agency.
A statement from Northern Ireland's Courts and Tribunals Service said the defendant is accused of attempting to remove criminal property from Northern Ireland.
He was brought to Coleraine Magistrates' Court today and was remanded in custody to Maghaberry Prison until 4 September when he will appear before Antrim Magistrates' Court.
