Gardaí are investigating after an estimated 133kg of cocaine bound for Ireland was seized in Costa Rica.
The drugs, which were seized at Moin Port in Limón by Drug Control Police, have an estimated value of over €10 million.
The cocaine was concealed in fruit cargo in a container on board a ship, the Polar Chile, which was destined for Ireland.
Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll said gardaí were assisting in the investigation for the purpose of determining the role of criminals based in Ireland in the attempted importation of the seized cocaine.
Mr O'Driscoll added that international cooperation was essential in targeting the criminal activity being engaged in by organised crime groups that have an international dimension.
