An investigation is under way into the death of a 23-year-old man following a stabbing incident in Shannon, Co Clare.

Gardaí say that two men were injured following an altercation between a number of people at the Shannon Knights Night Club in Tullyvarraga.

The two men were taken to hospital where one of them was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem examination has taken place at University Hospital Limerick.

The injuries of the second man, a 22-year-old, are not believed to be life threatening.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being detained at Shannon Garda Station.

The scene has been preserved.
