A 26-year-old man has been shot dead in an attack in Dublin's north inner city.

The shooting happened at around 9.45pm at the James Larkin House flats complex on the North Strand.

The victim, who was known to gardaí, was shot up to six times in the chest and stomach.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses say that the gunman was dressed in dark clothing and escaped from the scene on foot.

The victim was believed to be a close associate of the Hutch criminal gang.

Gardaí believe that the shooting is more likely connected to an attempt on the life of a man in Ballymun last year, which resulted in the double murder of his sister and friend.

The scene has been preserved and an appeal for witnesses has been issued. Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01-666800.
