A man in his 30s has been arrested in west Dublin following a search for a man believed to be armed.

The man was arrested at the Citywest shopping centre this afternoon after hijacking six cars, pointing a gun at a number of people and attacking another man with it at his home.

The sequence of events began at around 6.20am when, following an attack on his partner at her home in Brookview Way, he took her car and crashed it at Russell Square in Tallaght.

There he hijacked another car and drove it to Whitestown Way where he abandoned it.

Armed with a machine pistol, he then walked to the Watergate estate, broke into a house and hit a man on the head before stealing his car.

He abandoned that Renault Kadjar on the Naas Road and hijacked a Volvo.

He then abandoned that vehicle at a car showroom, pointed the gun at the salesman and stole a Subaru Impreza.

He later transferred from this car to a Mercedes E-Class.

Armed gardaí pursued him and he jumped out of that car and ran into the Citywest shopping centre where he was finally arrested at gunpoint just after 2pm.
