A 22-year-old man has appeared before Limerick District Court charged in connection with a serious assault in the city on St Patrick's Day which has left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

Darren Mason of St Munchin's Street, St Mary’s Park, faces three charges including assault causing harm, violent disorder and production of a traffic bollard capable of inflicting serious injury on Athlunkard Street on Tuesday night.

Detective Garda Aoife Keane told the court that the accused made no reply when charged and cautioned at Henry Street Garda Station.

The court heard that the alleged victim of the assault, Liam Higgins who is in his 50s, suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident.

The State opposed bail given the serious nature of the charges.

Det Gda Keane told the court it is alleged that Mr Mason was part of a group of people who became embroiled in a fight on the street outside Radcliffe’s Pub.

CCTV footage of the affray was shown to the court during the bail hearing.

Solicitor John Herbert, representing the 22-year-old accused, told the court the alleged offences occurred within two minutes of his client being stabbed.

The court heard that the accused received treatment and stitches for his injuries while in custody.

Judge Patricia Harney said she was satisfied having heard Det Gda Keane’s evidence in the case that bail should be refused.

She remanded Mr Mason in custody to appear before the court again on 24 March.

Gardaí made two further arrests in relation to the investigation this afternoon.

Two men in their 20s are being detained and questioned at a garda station in Limerick under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
