A jury has been empanelled at the start of the trial of a man accused of the murder of an 84-year-old in Co Kerry last year.

Thomas Carroll, 67, with an address at Brookway, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Patrick O'Mahony near Castlemaine on a date unknown between 24 and 25 February 2024.

The trial at the Central Criminal Court in Limerick is expected to take two to three weeks to complete.

Jurors were told by Mr Justice Patrick McGrath that more than 90 witnesses are listed to give evidence over the course of the proceedings.

Both the victim and the accused had served in the Defence Forces and had a shared interest in firearms and shooting sports.

The case has been adjourned until after lunch, when the jury of three women and nine men will hear details about the State's case against Thomas Carroll.
