An 18-year-old has been charged with the manslaughter of Ryan Weir Gibbons in Kildare town last month after an earlier altercation on a bus.

Ryan Murphy, which an address at Curragh Plains, Kildare town appeared before Naas District Court.

Mr Weir Gibbons died in hospital a few days after being found unresponsive on the Dublin Road in Kildare town on 26 October.

Detective Sargeant Pat Dunne told the court that he arrested the accused in his family home this morning.

He told the court Mr Murphy had been travelling home on a bus with friends after a night out and they were being "quite noisy and boisterous".

He said Mr Weir Gibbons took offence to the noise and asked them to be quieter.

The court heard that there was a verbal altercation between both men and then they "held each other's t-shirts" before they got off at separate stops.

They encountered each other again at 3.07am and Det Sgt Dunne said there was an alleged physical altercation in which a blow knocked Mr Weir Gibbons to the ground.

During a bail application, David Powderly said his client will argue that he was acting in self-defence and said Mr Murphy had presented himself voluntarily to gardaí on 26 October.

Gardaí objected to bail citing the seriousness of the charge and the maximum discretionary sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Judge Desmond Zaidan refused the bail application this morning and remanded the 18-year-old in custody to appear in court via video link next Wednesday.

The court heard Mr Murphy did his leaving cert this year and is a student in Carlow studying to be a rugby coach.
