A 25-year-old man has been before the district court in Cork charged with murdering his mother and with assault causing harm to his father.
David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork, was remanded in custody.
Stella Gallagher, who was 59, suffered fatal injuries when she was stabbed as she attempted to escape from her home at Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough on Monday night.
Her 62-year old husband, Brian, was seriously injured.
Ms Gallagher was brought to Cork University Hospital, but was pronounced dead there before midnight on Monday.
Gardaí began an investigation.
Yesterday, a technical and forensic examination was conducted at the Gallaghers' home, door-to-door enquiries were carried out, and a local green area was searched.
This afternoon, David Gallagher was brought before the district court in Cork.
Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes gave evidence of arresting David Gallagher and charging him with murdering his mother, and with assault causing harm to his father.
He said David Gallagher made no reply when the charges were put to him.
Solicitor Shane Collins-Daly said there was consent to a remand in custody.
Judge John King remanded Mr Gallagher in custody, and recommended that he receive urgent psychiatric evaluation in prison.
He will be back before the court next Thursday.
