Jury selected for trial of gardaí accused of perverting course of justice

A jury has been selected at Limerick Circuit Court for the trial of a garda superintendent and four gardaí who are accused of perverting the course of justice.

The five accused are former Garda Superintendent Eamon O'Neill, Sergeant Anne Marie Hassett, Sergeant Michelle Leahy, Garda Colm Geary and Garda Tom McGlinchy.

The charges against them follow an investigation by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation alleging they attempted to pervert the course of justice on a number of dates between October 2016 and September 2019, in relation to fixed charge penalty notices involving speeding, the use of mobile phones while driving, the non-wearing of seat belts and driving without insurance.

The jury of eight men and four women were told the trial would hear reference to prominent people in the sporting community in Co Limerick and a wider environs.

They were also told they would hear evidence from over 60 members of An Garda Síochána, including a number of chief superintendents from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, as well as staff from Go Safe Ireland and An Post.

The trial is due to begin tomorrow and is expected to last up to six weeks.
