A 39-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the seizure of cocaine worth over €8 million earlier this week.
Thomas Ryan, with an address at Rathdowney, Co Laois, was brought before Portlaoise District Court.
Detective Garda Stephen Gillespie, from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, said the accused was arrested and charged with the possession of cocaine and possession with intent to supply under sections 3 and 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
The charges relate to the seizure of 116kg of suspected cocaine during a garda search at Kilnaseer in Rathdowney, Co Laois, on Tuesday.
The court heard the accused made no reply when charged.
Det Gillespie said there would be objection to bail, although barrister Andrew Dunne for the accused made no application for bail while a statement of means was requested.
Judge Andrew Cody remanded Mr Ryan to Cloverhill Prison in Dublin and told him he will appear via videolink at Portlaoise District Court on 3 November.
