A 51-year-old man has been charged in connection with the seizure of drugs worth just over €3 million at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford.

Tony Abbey, of Tullow in Co Carlow, was arrested after the discovery of 150.6kg of suspected herbal cannabis on Saturday.

The drugs were seized when a truck that had disembarked a ferry from Bilbao in Spain was stopped and searched by Custom officers.

Mr Abbey appeared before a special sitting of Gorey District Court charged with two counts of drug possession.

Detective Garda Stephen Burke gave evidence of arrest, charge in caution.

He told the court that the accused is an international haulier and travels between Ireland and Europe.

Det Gda Burke said he was objecting to bail because of the seriousness of the charges and the fact that he deemed the accused a flight risk.

Defence solicitor Chris Hogan said that Mr Abbey had cooperated with Custom officers during the search of the truck.

The accused told the court that, if given bail, he would abide by the conditions laid down by the court.

Judge Miriam Walsh said that she would grant bail on an independent surety of €40,000 and €20,000 from the accused, with evidence of the monies available being provided from bank accounts.

She ordered that Mr Abbey sign on twice a day at Tullow Garda Station, observe a curfew from 11pm to 7am, provide a mobile phone number and not apply for any travel documents.

He was remanded in custody, with consent to bail, to appear before Wexford District Court on Wednesday.
