A 59-year-old man has appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court charged in connection with the seizure of 107kg of herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of €2.1m last week.

Robert Slivar, of no fixed abode but formerly of Ivanic in Croatia, was charged yesterday with possession and possession for sale and supply of drugs at the Port of Cork on Sunday 27 July.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Detective Garda Ryan Dillon. Mr Slivar made no reply after each charge was put to him under caution.

An application for bail was made in the case.

However, Garda Inspector Ray Dunne said gardaí were objecting to bail arising out of the seriousness of the charge and the strength of the evidence against the accused.

He added that Mr Slivar was a flight risk.

Judge John King declined to grant bail in the case and remanded Mr Slivar in custody to appear again at a special sitting of Cork District Court on Wednesday.

Judge King asked that a statement of means be furnished in the case prior to granting free legal aid.
