A doctor accused of dangerous driving causing the death of his young daughter on the M6 in Co Westmeath last year has had his case adjourned to allow his defence access to data from the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Babak Meshkat, of An Cimín Mór, Cappagh Road in Co Galway, appeared at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court in connection with the single-vehicle crash at Farthingstown, Rochfortbridge, Co Westmeath, on 8 February 2024.
Mr Meshkat's six-year-old daughter died from her injuries nine days later at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street in Dublin.
The court heard that lawyers for the 45-year-old doctor want to engage an independent expert to analyse the car's crash data before he enters a plea.
Barrister Gerard Groarke, for Mr Meshkat, told Judge Kenneth Connolly that the defence was seeking additional disclosure of evidence, which included access to an inspection of the data from a crash module installed in the vehicle.
Judge Connolly said it seemed reasonable for the module to be available for inspection by an appropriately qualified person, under the correct circumstances.
Prosecutor Cathal Ó Braonáin said that he had learned about the defence's request for access to the data this week and there was no objection.
Judge Connolly adjourned the case until 21 July for mention and remanded Mr Meshkat on continuing bail.
