A 32-year-old man has pleaded guilty to possession of a sub-machine gun in Finglas in Dublin three years ago.

Glen Ward, who has an address in Finglas, admitted he had a .223 Remington AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in circumstances as to give rise to a reasonable inference that he did not have it for a lawful purpose.

Ward replied guilty when the charge was put to him in the Special Criminal Court.

He has been remanded in custody for sentencing in April.

The maximum sentence for the firearms offence is 14 years.

Ms Justice Melanie Greally said the court was familiar with the general circumstances because it had already dealt with the co-accused, Ward's brother Eric O'Driscoll, who has already pleaded guilty to possession of the semi-automatic weapon.

The three-judge court heard in January this year that during a search of a home in Finglas in Dublin in February 2022, gardaí recovered a .223 calibre Remington AR-15 semi-automatic rifle along with a military grade sub-machine gun and ammunition.

Detective Inspector Damien Kenny told prosecution counsel Sean Gillane SC that the guns were found to be in good condition and were successfully fired by a garda ballistics examiner.

In June 2022 in an "unrelated incident" gardaí searched a taxi on the Tolka Valley Road and found a bank card in Eric O'Driscoll's name and a phone that they were later able to connect to the defendant.

Inspector Kenny said analysts found a video clip on the phone in which O'Driscoll could be seen taking the rifle from another man and firing it from the rear of a home in Finglas.

In another clip, the firearms that were seized in February 2022 were filmed having been laid out on a table at the same address in Finglas.

O'Driscoll has three previous convictions and has been in custody since January 2024.

The court has previously ordered that the men's addresses not be published.
