A 19-year-old man has been charged with assaulting Quham Babatunde after he had already been attacked and before he was fatally stabbed once more in Dublin city centre last month.
Faraj Odukoya, 19 and with an address at Hamlet Lane, Balbriggan, Dublin, appeared at Dublin District Court charged with assault causing harm to Mr Babatunde at Anne Street South on 15 February.
The 34-year-old victim, who was originally from Nigeria, died after being injured during a melee in the city centre at around 3am.
Gardaí found him unresponsive, and he was taken to St James's Street Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Detective Garda Joseph Heaphy said Mr Odukoya made no reply when charged at Pearse Street Garda Station yesterday evening.
Det Gda Heaphy said an investigation file would be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions with a recommendation for other serious charges.
Judge Fiona Brennan remanded Mr Odukoya in custody with consent to bail to appear at Cloverhill District Court on 18 March.
He can only be released when a €10,000 surety has been approved, and he must then sign on daily at a garda station, remain contactable by phone, not contact the co-accused and notify gardaí of any address change.
Legal aid was granted to the teenager, who did not address the court.
Mr Babatunde had been residing in the Ballyogan accommodation centre in south Dublin pending his international protection application.
Six other men have come before the courts on charges connected to his murder or events in the area that night.
They remain in custody on remand.
