The jury in the trial of three people accused of the rape and sexual assault of a young girl has been discharged.

Ms Justice Melanie Greally told the jury there had been a development and she had decided the trial should conclude and the matters heard by a different jury on a different date.

The judge said she did not take the decision lightly but said the court had a duty to ensure a fair trial.

The three people had gone on trial last week on a total of 21 charges, including the rape and sexual assault of the girl.

The mother of the child faces 13 charges of sexual assault and a charge of rape.

The complainant's uncle is charged with seven counts, including rape and oral rape.

A third man, who was a family friend, faces one count of oral rape when the child was older. They cannot be named to protect the anonymity of the complainant.

All three had denied all the charges.
