A man who damaged a bus and a garda car and looted from a number of shops during the Dublin riots in November 2023 has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Kyle Lawrence, 19 and from Lurgan Street in Dublin 7, pleaded guilty to charges of violet disorder, theft and criminal damage.

He was 18-years-old at the time and told gardaí that he had "made a bad decision" and got caught in the riots.

Judge Martin Nolan said Lawrence "participated energetically and fully" in the riots over a two-and-a-half-hour period but was "very young at the time" and should not be treated as "a full adult".

He sentenced Lawrence to four-and-a-half years in prison with the final year suspended.

He is the second rioter to be jailed by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Lawrence threw a fire extinguisher at a garda car, attacked and broke the windscreen of a bus that was later set on fire, smashed a security screen at Arnotts store and was among the looters who robbed shoes, clothes and sports gear from Asics, Footlocker, JD Sports, Lifestyle Sports and Penneys.

He left much of the goods he stole behind him on the street.

Lawrence did not cover his face and gardaí from Store Street said he was easily identified.

He fully admitted what he had done and told them he had been "nosey" and was "following the crowd".

He accepted he had been involved in "extreme lawlessness" and said he had "made a bad decision" and described what he had done as "violent and embarrassing".

His defence counsel said there were issues at home and Lawrence had been in State care for six years, from the age of 12 to 18.

He was not, he said, "on social media calling out the country was under attack".

Judge Nolan said while he "didn't profit" too greatly, Lawrence participated fully in the Dublin riots and did so "energetically and fully".

He accepted that Lawrence was not the instigator, that he got caught up in the moment and he was not violent towards any person.

The judge also said that even though he was very young at time and should not be treated as "a full adult", there had to be a custodial sentence.

He sentenced the 19-year-old to four-and-a-half years in prison with the final year suspended.
