The Courts Service has published its annual report for 2023 which shows cases challenging decisions in relation to granting asylum increased by 132% last year.

In 2022, 336 cases challenging decisions relating to the granting of asylum were lodged. This increased to 779 last year - an increase of 132%.

Judge Dunne said there had been reductions in waiting times and higher numbers of cases resolved. She said extra judges and the modernisation of systems were making "great changes" for all who deal with the courts.

Chief Executive of the Courts Service Angela Denning said extra judges appointed in 2023 had an instant impact in reducing backlogs and waiting times.

The report shows that the number of cases finalised in the Central Criminal Court, which deals with the most serious criminal offences, increased by 10% over 2022.

Almost €257 million was awarded in total for personal injury cases in 2023

The cases finalised in the Circuit Criminal Court increased by 5%.

The service also says that the number of new serious offences has dropped year on year.

It also shows that of 539 rape cases handed down last year, 62% were for ten years or more ranging up to life in prison.

In the civil courts, almost €257m was awarded in total for personal injury cases. This was around the same as in 2022.

The highest award was €20.5m while the lowest was just over €1,000.

Medical negligence cases accounted for just over €167m of the total.

There was a large increase in the number of injunctions sought in the high court - up from 188 in 2022 to 326 last year.

There was also an increase in the number of cases seeking possession of property up from 898 to 1,091.
