A sports coach has gone on trial charged with the rape and indecent assault of a teenage girl in 1989 and 1990.

The man, who is now 78 years old, is charged with one count of rape and 15 counts of indecent assault of the girl who was aged 13 and 14 at the time.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at a Leinster school.

The man denies all the allegations.

The jury heard the man took the girl to a side room on a number of occasions where he indecently assaulted her under the pretext of taking measurements.

On one occasion, it is alleged he raped her.

The trial is expected to last around a week.

The man cannot be named because he is charged with rape and to protect the identity of the complainant in the case.

Judge Melanie Greally warned the jurors at the Central Criminal Court to decide the case purely on the evidence they hear in court.

She said they should not discuss the case with anyone or carry out any internet searches on the case.
