Garda charged with burglary and perverting course of justice

A garda has appeared in court charged with corruption offences two-and-a-half years ago.

Mark Duffy, aged 39 and with an address at Dublin 15, is accused of perverting the course of justice and burglary.

He was remanded on bail until May.

Garda Duffy appeared before Dublin District Court on foot of a criminal investigation by An Garda Síochána's Anti-Corruption Unit.

He is charged with two offences allegedly committed over a six-month period between June and December 2021.

He is accused of carrying out an act with intent to pervert the course of justice between 28 August 2021 and 20 December 2021 and of entering a flat at Kenilworth Road in Rathmines, Dublin, and committing theft on 19 June 2021.

Detective Sergeant Paul Dowling gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court he arrested Mark Duffy on 7 March at 10:10am after he met by appointment at Irishtown Garda Station for the purpose of charge and when he was charged at 10:21am, the garda made no reply to the charges.

Det Sgt Dowling said the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment on both charges.

Defence solicitor Donal Quigley described Garda Duffy in court as a suitable candidate for free legal aid and a statement of means was handed in.

Judge Treasa Kelly granted him free legal aid and remanded him on continuing bail to appear again on 17 May for service of the book of evidence.
