A "complex" investigation into the death of a mother-of-one in Co Cork has involved enquiries being made in India, the UK and the US as well as the analysis of hundreds of thousands of pages of telephonic data, a court has heard.

Regin Parithapara Rajan, 41, has been charged with the murder of his wife Deepa Paruthiyezhuth Dinamani at their home in Cardinal Court in Wilton on 14 July.

The deceased, who was a 38-year-old chartered accountant from Kerala in southern India, had been living in Cork for three months at the time of her death.

The garda file in relation to the investigation is currently with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Regin Parithapara Rajan was remanded in custory

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke previously made an application for the matter to be struck arising out of a "delay" in obtaining DPP directions.

Today at Cork District Court, he again repeated that an explanation was needed in relation to the delay.

Detective Inspector Jason Lynch, of Anglesea Street Garda Station, said that it was a very "complex" investigation which involved international enquiries, the analysis of 850,000 pages of data, substantial forensic evidence as well as the taking of 110 statements.

"I am expecting swift directions from the DPP. I would request a further remand in custody for a period of two weeks," he said.

Mr Burke asked the detective inspector: "Will we have directions in a fortnight?" He answered: "I would be hopeful."

Mr Rajan, who appeared by video link from prison, was remanded in custody by Judge Mary Dorian until 3 January 2024.
