Beaumont Hospital has apologised in the High Court to the family of a young girl who died there more than six years ago.

11-year-old Ella Noonan went into cardiac arrest and died on 15 January 2018, hours after successful brain surgery to insert a shunt.

The Hospital apologised for the failings in her care and the devastation caused to her family.

The High Court was told by Senior Counsel, Jeremy Maher that it was the family's case that a pulse oximeter on Ella’s toe to check oxygen levels in her blood had fallen off, but he said the alarm that would have alerted staff had been turned down or disabled.

He said this was "apparently for patient comfort over patient safety". He said if the oximeter had been in place the problem with Ella’s oxygen levels would have been detected and the cardiac arrest would not have taken place.

Mr Maher said the little girl was missed every day by her devastated family.

Outside court, her parents, John and Claire Noonan from Westport in Co Mayo said their "beautiful brave daughter", had "filled the world with joy and laughter during her short time on earth".

They said they never wanted to end up in court but had realised it was the only way they would ever uncover the truth about the mistakes that were made in Ella’s care.
