A teenage boy who was charged in connection with a robbery and assault of a number of English tourists in Dublin earlier this month has had his bail revoked and been remanded in custody.

The 16-year-old appeared in court last week and was bailed subject to stringent conditions, including a curfew between 9pm and 8am, and an order to stay out of the Dublin 2 area.

He appeared before Dublin Children's Court this morning, which heard that he returned to the same area yesterday afternoon but knocked over an elderly woman and injured a garda inspector while evading gardaí who knew he had been banned from that part of the city.

The accused, who cannot be identified because he is a minor, had been charged with assault causing harm to two men and robbery of a third at Fownes Street on the night of 11 August.

The men are members of amateur soccer club St John's Sports from Aylesbury in England, which had travelled to Dublin to play a pre-season friendly against a team from St Kevin's FC in Whitehall, Dublin.

Garda Derek Brierton and the teenager's case manager, Garda Sergeant Tom Murphy, gave an update about the boy's compliance with bail terms in court today.

Sergeant Murphy said the conditions were made because the incident was a gratuitous attack, but the teenager broke the curfew once. He added that the boy was also spotted in Temple Bar "in disguise".

Garda Brierton alleged the boy ran when he was observed near Fownes Street and "in the process of running knocked over an elderly lady" and then ran into a garda inspector who suffered a dislocated shoulder.

The boy's solicitor Luke Staines said the teenager claimed he was taking a shortcut to a gym. However, the court heard he could have used another route.

Mr Staines pleaded for his client, who was accompanied to court by his father, to be given a "last chance saloon" chance to adhere to the order.

Judge Alan Mitchell revoked bail and remanded the teenager in custody to the Oberstown Children Detention Campus pending his next hearing on Friday.
